1805<1/2 C> Large 5, With Stems. C-4, B-4, R.2. Die State 1. AU58 NGC. XF45 EAC. Large 5 touches drapery; Highest leaf below center of S. Although still an example of Manley's State 1, this appears to be a little later striking than the other C-4 in the Reiver Collection. A scratch by the 5 in the date is in almost the same location as the die crack in the later die states of this variety. Die defects in the right obverse field by the chin are clearly visible on this example. Breen called this a wart, but the more creative Ebenezer Gilbert called it a "diminutive goatee." He also believed that the obverse die was formerly used for the Gilbert-3 variety (Cohen-3), with "the figure 3 obliterated, and otherwise recut." Today, we know this is not the case and that this obverse is a different die. The surfaces have mottled olive and steel color with lighter tan on the reverse. Traces of luster remain visible, primarily on the reverse as well. Lightly scratched and abraded surfaces, but not significantly so.
Ex: Superior (9/1985), lot 149; Bob Yuell (2/22/1999). Envelope Included.
