1804 Five Dollar, Judd-34, Pollock-46, High
1805 Five Dollar, Judd-37, Pollock-6115, R.8, PR65 Brown NGC. A private striking made from scrap dies of the regular issue 1805 five dollar. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The dies were broken and heavily rusted and sold by the mint in the 1860s as scrap. They were most likely sold to Joseph Mickley or Montroville Dickeson. Obviously only a few pieces could have been struck from such badly deteriorated dies. USPatterns.com records one in silver, two in copper, one in white metal, and a uniface obverse splasher in white metal. Medallic alignment. Much of the underlying mint red can still be made out beneath the brown patina that covers most of each side. Considering all the as-struck problems, this piece is surprisingly well preserved.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
