1804 Copperplate Engraving By AMOS DOOLITTLE Roman Inspecting Various Coinage Designs For Minting
c. 1804, Copperplate Engraving By AMOS DOOLITTLE, from a publication Printed by Isaiah Thomas Jr., (Worcester, Massachusetts), Very Fine.
This quite rare and original copper plate engraving of a classical scene by famed Colonial American engraver AMOS DOOLITTLE (as imprinted at bottom), from an unknown c. 1804 publication printed by Isaiah Thomas Jr. ( as imprinted at top), of Worcester, Massachusetts. It has an overall size of 6.75” x 4” on period laid rag paper having a blank reverse. It is in well printed quite good condition with some expected light even overall age. AMOS DOOLITTLE [1754-1832] was an engraver of banknotes, portraits and prints, best known for his eyewitness series on the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He was also a Silversmith, and is known as the "Paul Revere of Connecticut." This prints shows a Roman, possibly Caesar, inspecting a scroll displaying Various Coinage Designs apparently for Minting. A great theme and fabulous for Colonial and Ancient Coin numismatists. His engravings are quite scarce as few survive.
