1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems VF20
1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems VF20. Double Struck way off center. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with frosty steel toning in protected areas. Very smooth. The notable mark is a dent on the upper edge of the bust with a fine arcing line up from the dent, and it appears this may have happened in the mint (read on). The first strike was centered on the planchet but the coin failed to eject completely and another strike about 40% off center and at an angle left a clear but partial impression from the obverse die left of the head. The designs from the second strike include the curl under the ribbon up to the ear. On the reverse during this second strike was a new blank planchet that left a clear impression about 85% off center at NITED. During this second strike the die left an arc from the bust into the field above and a corresponding arc through the F in HALF into the wreath above. These impressions are directly opposite each other and the spacing between the die designs left during the second strike and these arcs are consistent with the position of the outer edge of the dies (although it is possible a third planchet was in the coining chamber adding to the confusion. A really interesting and attractive piece with a complicated mint error.
Estimated Value $200-UP.
