1804 C-11 R2 Plain 4 with Stems VG10
1804 C-11 R2 Plain 4 with Stems VG10. Double Struck on a Clipped Planchet. Sharpness F15 with microscopic roughness under a glossy dark olive and steel patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of steel brown. A nick-like planchet void in the field before the neck is the only notable mark. Double struck on a planchet that has a small clip left of the L in LIBERTY. The initial strike was centered on the planchet and the second was against the die on the obverse but the second strike on the reverse was against a new blank planchet positioned 50% off center. The two obverse strikes were rotated about 15 degrees between the impressions leaving clear evidence of the second strike on the forehead and top of the head. The reverse shows a clear impression from the blank planchet arcing from the rim above the D in UNITED down to the rim below the second A in AMERICA. The second strike, being against an uneven surface since the blank planchet was inserted only half way into the coining chamber, caused a subtle bend in the coin. A relatively complicated mint error but one that is easy to explain given the clear evidence.
Estimated Value $250-UP.
