1804 C-1 R3 PCGS graded AU55
Frosty steel brown with tan in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. Peeps of mint luster show in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The only marks are a couple thin nicks in the field above the hair ribbon and a small puff of darker olive brown toning on the bust. Just a light touch of friction on the highpoints of the devices and the eye appeal of this half cent is excellent. Scarce EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman state 1, with a light die crack arcing from the second T in STATES to the right side of the M in AMERICA (this crack occurred during the die's earlier use during the 1803 C-3 die pairing). Our grade is AU50. A high condition census example of a variety that is seldom found in grades above VF. Only a single mint state example is known, and it has an ugly stain on the obverse (Missouri Cabinet Collection, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/26/2014:59 which brought $21,850). The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. (The slab is scuffed on the reverse.)
