1804 $5 Small 8 Over Large 8--Obverse Struck Through--
1804<$5> Small 8 Over Large 8 Half Eagle--Obverse Struck Through--AU58 NGC. Breen-6442, B. 1-B, Miller-60, High R.5. A semi-lustrous, orange-gold, near-Mint example that shows slight wear on the cap and forehead curl. Light mint-made adjustment marks cross UNITED, the shield, and the eagle's breast. Undisturbed aside from a few unimportant obverse hairlines. The reverse has an interesting pair of lengthy vertical die cracks that bookend the eagle's shield. Although the Small 8 Over Large 8 repunching is more dramatic, the 1 and 0 also exhibit noticeable recutting. Two bold die lines extend from centers of olive branch leaves; these add further character to the variety. A lengthy thin strike-through (as made) is seen from the obverse rim at 2:30 to the center of Liberty's neck, and passes beneath the chin. This strike-through is most likely the result of a piece of wire that fell between the die and the planchet, leaving the impression of the wire on the struck coin. This piece is actually a double error, combining a die error (Small 8 Over Large 8) with a minting error (the strike-through). As such, this is a very rare and infrequently encountered early gold coin that should be of interest to a wide variety of bidders.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
