<B>1804 $2 1/2 14 Star Reverse AU58 PCGS.</B></I> Breen-6119, BD-2, R.4. BD Obverse State b/Reverse State a. This die state differs from the MS61 below by the lack of the second die crack, the one that extends vertically in the left field from the curl to near star 7. It does, however, have the crack to the right of the 4 in the date from the rim to the bust. It is unusual to have two die states from such a rare coin. This is confirmed with the first sentence in the BD reference for this variety (page 77): "With so few struck for all quarter eagles, Bass knew he was unlikely to find differing die states. Thus, his notes for this variety were sparse." However, over his decades of collecting he acquired four examples of the 14 Star Reverse. Three of them were in State a/a (no cracks on either side) and one was in State b/a (as the present coin). The true specialist will appreciate the subtle variances between these two coins and the unusual opportunity offered here.<BR> The surfaces of this piece are bright yellow-gold. The striking details are well brought up on each side. A few small abrasions are scattered about, but none are of individual significance.
