Consultation with the Guide Book provides a mintage figure of 96,500 cents dated 1804. During the year, however, the Mint actually produced 756,838 cents recorded in six individual delivery warrants. The final warrant, dated December 31 and including all cents coined after the November 12 delivery, totaled 96,500 coins, and this is the figure used. The assumption is that all cents struck earlier in the year were from dies dated 1803. Unfortunately, the Mint did not keep track of mintage figures for coin dates, only for annual production.
The reverse is rotated approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise, a constant among genuine cents of this year. Every genuine 1804 large cent has the 0 in the date exactly opposite the O in OF, assisting in the authentication process. Large cents of this date are often collected by die state. This is the early die state without rim breaks on either side. The next die state has an obverse rim break and the final die state has an additional rim break on the reverse. See the next two lots for examples of each. This is an absolutely wonderful example with choice medium brown surfaces. Only a few light abrasions are seen. While most 1804 cents are on dark or porous planchets, a smooth light brown representative of this date is an unusual occurrence.
Ex: George D. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:3320
