1804<1C> Restrike MS66 Brown PCGS. J-28a. According to Breen, these coins were struck about 1858 by a person or persons unknown, possibly Mickley or Dickeson, from discarded dies sold by the mint in 1833 as scrap metal. The dies were badly rusted and required retouching. The obverse date was altered from 1803 to 1804, as can be clearly seen on this specimen, the reverse is one from an 1820 issue. This coin is mostly brown with a little red color visible on the obverse, and exhibiting normal striking characteristics. Elusive and highly collectible, especially in this grade. EAC 60.
