1804<1C> Copper "Restrike" Low R.2. MS65 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. Die State II. This notorious so-called "1804 Mint restrike" inspired Walter Breen's comment in his large cent Encyclopedia that its name exemplifies the "Guinea Pig Principle" that "guinea pigs have that name because they are neither pigs nor from Guinea." Breen then proceeds to elaborate the reasons why this coin is neither 1804, nor Mint, nor restrike. It suffices to say that this issue was created by the unprincipled to bilk the uninitiated, combining an altered, badly rusted 1803 large cent obverse with an 1820 reverse. Specimens were struck in both copper and tin. The present example has considerable mint red in the protected areas. A prominent die crack arcs through the lower left obverse. A second smaller crack runs from this crack toward the nose.
Ex: George Ramont. Envelope Included.
