1804<1C> S-266c, B-1, R.2--Environmental Damage--NCS. AU Details. Fine 15 EAC. Die State IV. Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents 1793-1814 comments that more than half of the existing examples of the 1804 cent, estimated around 1,000 pieces, are Die State IV. This latest die state has as diagnostics rim breaks above RTY on the obverse and MERIC on the reverse. The present example has glossy, medium-brown fields that show faint, faded red in the protected areas. However, the obverse fields are highly porous over most of the area to the right of an imaginary line that runs from the 1 in the date to the R in LIBERTY. The reverse is smooth. Examination under a glass reveals a straight scrape across Liberty's neck from the forecurl to the curl below the ribbon, and a handful of smaller marks on each side of no singular consequence. Aside from the obverse surface porosity, this remains an attractive and delightfully well detailed example of this key-date large cent.
Ex: Silton; Ray Johnson (12/10/1966). Envelope Included.
