1804<1C> S-266a, B-1, R.2--Corroded--NCS. AU Details. Fine 12 EAC. Die State I. The second rarest date of large cents, after 1799. The Guide Book provides a mintage figure of 96,500 cents dated 1804. Although the Mint reported coining something more than three-quarters of a million cents that year, the assumption is that most or all of them were dated 1803. Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia points out that 1804 large cents may have been struck in 1805 or even '06. The reverse is rotated approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise, a constant among genuine 1804 cents. Every genuine 1804 cent has the 0 in the date directly opposite the O in OF, aiding in authentication. This is the early die state lacking cracks or rim breaks. The present coin's corrosion has left the surfaces rough and heavily porous. This porosity is visible to the naked eye and mostly uniform, although the obverse has heavier porosity just above the date (with all date details intact), in a small area just above the drapery, and in the right field. The reverse roughness is most noticeable around STATES OF. Despite the surface challenges, the coin is well struck on a medium-brown, slightly glossy, and otherwise problem-free planchet, with both sides showing strong detail. A pleasing and affordable specimen of this key-date large cent. Envelope Included.
