<B>1804 10C 14 Stars on Reverse AU53 PCGS.</B></I> Ex: Eliasberg. JR-2, R.5. This is the first auction appearance of this example in several decades as it did not appear in any of the previous Eliasberg sales. Two varieties are known for the 1804 dimes, identified by either 13 stars or 14 stars on the reverse. This 14 Stars variety is considerably scarcer, and the present example is almost certainly the finest known of these pieces, arguably the finest known of the date. Only one piece has received a higher certified grade, an AU55 example of the 13 Stars reverse certified by NGC.<BR> While the recorded mintage for the date was just 8,265 pieces, most numismatists today believe that a small number of the dimes struck in 1805 were also dated 1804. There are probably about 60 to 70 surviving examples of the 13 Stars variety and 40 to 50 surviving examples of this 14 Stars variety, including pieces that have been certified and others that have not been graded.<BR> This piece is a lovely example with exquisite central obverse and reverse details. The left side of the obverse and reverse exhibit some weakness, a characteristic of the variety and similar on every known piece. Pale golden-brown toning is visible across much of the obverse and reverse with some areas of lighter silver color. Light wear is evident only on Liberty's shoulder, a few of the hair strands, and the clouds over the eagle. While faint hairlines are typical for these coins, few can boast the quality of surfaces seen here. This is an amazing example of the date and variety, easily a coin that will gain the attention of variety collectors and specialists.<BR> NGC and PCGS have combined to grade 23 examples of the 13 Stars variety with an average grade of just 29, while these two services have graded just nine examples of the 14 stars variety with an average grade of 31. While considering this data, it is important to remember that average certified grades tend to be higher than the overall average grade.
