1804<$10> Crosslet 4 AU53 PCGS. Breen-6847, B. 1-A, Taraszka-31, R.4. A pleasing, still-lustrous early eagle with rich reddish-orange peripheral accents that help to generate the coin's considerable eye appeal. The strike is at least the equal of the handful we have offered over the past decade, being obviously deficient in no particular area but just a bit lacking throughout. The faint die crack on the left side of the obverse as described on our Cincinnati Collection specimen (an AU53 that realized over $32,000 in last year's FUN sale) is also visible here, but there is no trace of crack from the tip of the bust through star 11.
In addition to the aura that accompanies the various issues from this year of production (in large part provided by silver dollar and large cent of the same date), the 1804 ten dollar is a rarity in its own right, being at least as elusive as the diminutive mintage of 3,757 pieces would imply. Struck in the final year of the Capped Bust Heraldic Eagle type, the denomination was not resumed until production of Christian Gobrecht's Coronet design in 1838. Population: 0 in 53, 0 finer (11/05).
From The Guadalupe Collection.
