1804<1/2 C> Spiked Chin. C-7, B-5, R.4. Die State 7. Good 4 NGC. Good 4 EAC. Spiked Chin; Triplet below F. This is one of several varieties that have come down in rarity over the years. In 1916, Gilbert only knew of two examples. When Roger Cohen published his first edition, he rated this variety R.6 with less than 30 known. By the time of his second edition, the rating was dropped to R.5 with about 50 known, and today it is R.4 with 120 or so examples known. We expect that the current rarity is stable, although it is possible that this may be considered R.3 in another 10 or 20 years. The condition census for this variety is quite low, and to date the finest example known grades just AU. In the November 1996 issue of Penny-Wise, Ron Manley presented data on 100 different examples of this variety. His data indicated that Breen States I, VI, and VIII are the three most common die states, comprising over half of his 100 coin sample. This deep olive example exhibits considerable wear, yet it is relatively problem-free. The surfaces only exhibit the usual circulation marks for the grade, and a number of these are concentrated at the center of the reverse.
