1803 S$1 Small 3 VF35 NGC. B-3, BB-256, Low R.6. Die State I. Star 1 far from curl, stars 7 and 8 close to L and Y, and star 13 closest to drapery; outer arrow entirely left of N. It is believed that the 1803 B-2 dollar does not exist, thus this B-3 variety is clearly the rarest of all 1803 die marriages, and one of the eight rarest varieties of this design type. Just three of the 16 varieties coined from 1801 through 1803 are from reverse dies that were not used elsewhere. The others are 1801 B-1 and B-3 die varieties. Mostly light gray color with considerable pale gold toning on each side. A few light surface marks are noted. Perhaps nicer than the assigned grade, as generous portions of mint luster are still present, and almost certainly well within the Condition Census. This variety is almost always found flatly or bluntly struck.
Ex: Ellesmere Numismatics (7/2002).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
