1803 H10C Small 8 XF40 PCGS. V-3, LM-1, R.6. The 1803 Small 8 half dime is one of the great unheralded rarities in U.S. numismatics. It is significantly more rare than the Large 8. PCGS has certified just nine pieces in all grades, the lowest as AG3, and the single finest as AU55. Although certified as XF40, the piece appears sharper than the AU50 Jules Reiver example, which Heritage auctioned last January. The strike is bold throughout the major devices, aside from minor bluntness on the bust truncation and the cloud pair directly opposite. The dove-gray, golden-brown, and aqua-blue toning is both light and attractive. No marks are untoward for the grade, and the overall appearance is pleasing, but to identify the piece in future auctions, we note a thin vertical mark on the top of the hair beneath the E. Early silver specialists know the significance of the present opportunity. Tied for third finest known. The rarity of this issue exceeds that of even the famous 1802. Population: 2 in 40, 2 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
