1803<H10C> V-3, LM-1, R.6. Reiver die state a. Small 8 AU50 NGC. Light steel gray and quite attractive for the grade and probably high in the Condition Census for the variety. Close examination with a loupe will note a couple of trivial surface scratches in the obverse fields, but no serious or distracting marks or nicks are found. A later die state with the die bulged near star eight and below Liberty's bust. In terms of rarity, the Small 8 variety remains one of the most difficult of the early half dimes to obtain. PCGS has graded only three coins as high as XF40, and none finer, and three more in lower grades. NGC has only graded two examples, the present coin and one slightly finer as AU55. In the John Reich condition census published in late 2001 collectors noted a couple of mint state coins and one other in AU to represent this variety. An important Guide Book variety and a very, very difficult coin to find in this lofty grade. A prize worthy of any collection.
Ex: Julian Leidman (August, 1982). Envelope Included.
