1803 H10C Large 8 MS62 NGC. LM-3, V-2, R.3. The recorded mintage for the year was 37,850 coins, and this mintage was accomplished through a combination of two obverse dies and two reverse dies. The reverse die of this variety was used again in 1805. Three die varieties are known for the 1803 half dimes and this is easily the most common variety, yet it is a rarity in Mint State grades. Even XF and AU examples of this issue are difficult to locate. This particular example is important for its overall condition, but also for its excellent strike. The obverse is slightly weak on the drapery, but all other design elements are boldly defined. Similarly, the reverse has sharp design details everywhere except for the fifth cloud. The surfaces have light abrasions, but are lustrous with a satiny appearance. Vivid gold, lilac, and blue toning over ivory color gives this coin a vibrant personality. The dies are essentially perfect with faint clash marks visible on both sides. This is an attractive and desirable example.
