1803<H10C> Large 8 AU Details, Improperly Cleaned NCS. V-1, LM-2, R.4. Struck from the usual die states with clash marks and a rim break on the reverse. This reverse die was used for 1801, 1802, 1803 LM-1, and 1803 LM-2 Half Dimes. In fact, only four reverse dies were created for the entire Heraldic Eagle design for Half Dimes from 1800 to 1805. These were combined with nine obverse dies for a total of 11 die varieties. This is an outstanding example with lustrous obverse and reverse surfaces. Both sides have light ivory color. The surfaces are lightly abraded with a few minor scratches. The NCS designation, while technically correct, does not provide the true character of this special Half Dime.
Ex: Heritage (2/1989), lot 230.
From The William A.
