1803 50C Large 3 AU55 PCGS
1803 50C Large 3 AU55 PCGS. O-101, R.3. Production of half dollars ramped up significantly in 1803 compared to the two previous years. The mintage was 188,234 pieces, but of that number 156,519 are believed to have been struck in 1804. Of the four varieties from this year, three are from the same Large 3 dies (Obverse 1).
A very early die state, this piece has extremely faint die cracks through the tops of IB and ERT, similar to the other example in this offering but even lighter. The reverse does not exhibit the usual clash marks, but has evidence of light die rust through parts of the legend.
Probably just outside the Condition Census, this piece has light silver-gray surfaces with nearly full mint luster and light reflectivity in the fields. Both sides have sea-green, gold, and iridescent toning near the borders. A few faint ticks are evident on each side, but there are none of any significance.
Haseltine-2; Beistle 2b-B; Overton-1; PCGS# 6066; Encyclopedia-4570.
Ex: Alpine Numismatics (9/2006).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
