1803 50C Large 3 AU53 PCGS
1803 50C Large 3 AU53 PCGS. O-103, R.3. This is the final use of the Large 3 obverse die. The reverse has 13 arrows and star 12 is attached to the front of the eagle's beak well above the point. On this piece, the obverse has die cracks through LIBERTY, slightly advanced from the O-101 or O-102 die marriages. Light clash marks are visible between the bust and date, and elsewhere on the obverse. There is no evidence of the die crack through the clouds below STATES that is usually seen on this die combination.
Pleasing ivory luster on both sides is enhanced by deep steel toning near the borders with splashes of gold color on the reverse. A few thin toning lines on the obverse are probably the result of slight impurities in the metal present at the time of striking.
This piece ranks fourth or fifth in the Condition Census for the O-103 variety. At least four Uncirculated examples are known of the O-103. The finest is an NGC MS64 that realized $77,625 in our New York Auction in July, 2004.
Haseltine-3; Beistle 2-Ab; Overton-5; PCGS# 6066; Encyclopedia-4571.
Ex: Sheridan Downey (7/1997).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
