1803 50C Large 3 AU50 PCGS. O-102a, High R.3. Struck from the same obverse die as O-101 and 103. The reverse die is different and can most easily be distinguished by 13 arrows on the reverse, rather than the 12 that are seen on the O-101. There is also an obvious die dot below the D in UNITED on the 102 coins.
Tiny oval die chips are located at the top left corner of Liberty's drapery and diagonally above and left, hidden in the hair strands. The obverse has light clash marks at the top of Liberty's head, and a faint crack begins at star 7 and connects the tops of each letter in LIBERTY. Minor clash marks are visible on the reverse. The TAT crack described by Overton continues to the upright of E and the crack through ERICA is heavy, and reaches the rim above the final A. Additional reverse cracks are present: from the tail feathers to the arrow feathers and the top of U; diagonally down to the left through all vertical shield stripes to the inside arrowhead; through the lower parts of AMER; from the inside upright of D to the third tail feather; and from the base of that letter to the scroll.
Nearly full luster is present with some central weakness but otherwise sharp details. Both sides have pleasing golden-rose color with hints of rose toning. A few scattered surface marks are visible on each side, but none are significant. A few diagonal drawing lines are evident at the lower left part of the obverse. These parallel grooves were created when the silver strip was prepared by passes through the drawing machine to achieve the desired thickness before planchets were punched from the strip.
A definite Condition Census coin. The finest examples listed on Stephen Herrman's listing in auctions and mail bid sales are: 55/55, 55/55 (this coin), 50/50, 50/50, 45/45.
Haseltine-1; Beistle 2-C; Overton-4; PCGS# 6066; Encyclopedia-4570.
Ex: Lindesmith & LaRiviere Collections (Bowers and Merena, 11/1999), lot 2038; Queller Family Collection (Stack's, 10/2002), lot 29.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
