For the date, a frosty, satiny light golden example with nice cartwheel luster on both sides. Attractively struck as well, with just a hint of softness at the complex ares of the reverse. Most probably, the early half eagles like this 1803, once they were distributed to the respective depositors, were retained by foreign banks and other depositories. After June 28, 1834, when the American gold coin specifications were changed and the authorized weights of gold coins changed, nearly all earlier American gold coins were rounded up and melted, as relying upon their face value was no longer a valid way for foreign holders to evaluate them, in light of new-weight gold coins produced on and after August 1, 1834 (the date of implementation of the Act of June 28, 1834).
