1803/2<$5> MS64 NGC. Breen-6441, B. 1-D, Miller-57, R.4. The T in UNITED is widely recut, while the T in LIBERTY has a broken right foot. These two die characteristics confirm this scarce variety. Just as all 1802 half eagles are in fact 1802/1 overdates, all 1803 half eagles are overdated from 1802. The present beautiful pale lime-gold near-Gem has only inconsequential contact, and no adjustment marks are present. The strike is generally sharp, since softness of detail is limited to the fletchings and the leftmost portion of the shield. Early half eagles are the subject of an upcoming reference by John Dannreuther that is likely to make die variety collecting within the series more accessible. Census: 8 in 64, 3 finer (6/06).
