1803/2 $5 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6441, BD-3, R.4. The T in LIBERTY is missing its right foot, and the Y lacks its left foot. The top of the 3 in the date is just below the bust truncation. Although the underdigit 2 protrudes from the right side of the 3 in two places, part of the bottom of the 2 is missing inside the 3, the result of die lapping. Star 9 on the obverse is away from the Y in LIBERTY, also the apparent result of die lapping. The top of the 1 in the date is blunt.
This obverse was used for several different die pairings in the Capped Bust half eagle series, with this pairing likely the final one, as there are small but extensive peripheral die cracks joining many of the rim elements. This beautiful example offers splendid orange-gold, semiprooflike surfaces. Only the most minuscule, undistracting abrasions and light hairlines appear under a high-powered loupe.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
