1803/2<$5> MS62 NGC. Breen-6441, B. 2-D, Miller-58, R.4. Two different obverse dies were used to coin 1803 Half Eagles. Both dies have remarkably similar layouts, and both have a bold 2 underdigit within the 3 in the date. The Breen-2 obverse die is best differentiated by its perfect T in LIBERTY. The more often encountered Breen-1 die has a defective right foot on the T. Like all Early Half Eagles, the 1803/2 has a low survival rate, since the pieces were worth more as bullion than as legal tender. Most were melted soon after production, and others were polished and set into jewelry. Mint State examples without relevant adjustment marks, hairlines, or scratches are decidedly rare. The present piece is exquisitely struck, since only the dentils near 7 o'clock on the reverse lack intricate detail. A single light adjustment mark (as made) crosses the fletchings, and the obverse field has a few light marks appropriate for the grade. The eye appeal is exceptional, and this lovely representative would be an excellent acquisition for the dedicated early gold specialist.
