1803/2 $5 MS62 NGC. B. 2-D, Miller-58, R.4. While certainly not a common coin in an absolute sense, the 1803/2 does boast a respectable original mintage (33,506 pieces) for a Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. Indeed, this date is the most readily obtainable in this early U.S. gold series along with the 1806 Round Top 6. With overall sharp striking definition and a pleasingly lustrous sheen for the grade, this particular example would fit nicely into a BU quality type set. A few well concealed adjustment marks (as struck) are seen on the obverse behind Liberty's eye, and some wispy grade-defining abrasions are also seen on that side as well as on the reverse. This late die state example reveals well advanced die cracks (also as produced) around the obverse date. A similarly graded 1803/2 Five Dollar traded hands for $13,800 as lot 6513 in our June 1999 Long Beach Signature Sale.
