Once upon a time, this was considered to be a rare die variety, but examination of a large number of auction catalogs over many years has shown that this is actually the second most common variety of the date. Because Walter Breen overlooked including this variety in his first half eagle monograph, everyone assumed that it was a rarity. This overdate variety was apparently known to W. Elliot Woodward in the second half of the 19th century. Many of his catalogs record two different overdate obverse dies for the date. This Mint State example is a splendid half eagle with lovely green-gold surfaces and full satiny luster. The fields are slightly reflective and the design motifs are strongly detailed. Faint hairlines and light abrasions are evident on each side, consistent with the grade. The obverse has a die crack through the base of the date, extending left to star 1 and right to star 15.
From The Antigo Collection.
