1803/2<$5>--Cleaned--ANACS. AU55 Details. Breen-6441, B. 2-D, Miller-58, R.4. All 1803 half eagles are overdates, but made from two different obverse dies. The obverse die on this variety has a perfect T in LIBERTY that aids in prompt attribution, and a prominent die crack runs through the bottom of all four digits of the date and beneath star 13. The reverse shows a die crack from the eagle's right (facing) wing, through the top olive leaf, through the E in AMERICA, and to the rim. Although the fields are a touch too bright from an old cleaning, the effect is undistracting, and only a few light adjustment marks are seen on the obverse. The strike through the central reverse is weak, as usually seen. Despite these minor impairments, this is an attractive and elusive variety that should please early gold specialists.
