1803/2<$5> AU50 PCGS. Breen-6441, B. 1-D, Miller-57, R.4. All 1803 half eagles are 1803/2 overdates, but they were coined from two different overdate obverse dies. This obverse, which is the long-recognized obverse die for the year, has the right base of T and left base of Y missing. The other obverse has the right base of T complete, and is always seen with a heavy die crack through the base of the date. When it was first discovered (technically rediscovered as W. Elliot Woodward discussed two overdate obverses in the 1860s), it was thought that the second obverse constituted a rare variety, although now we understand that all 1803/2 varieties are equally common. A pleasing light green-gold example with hints of orange toning near the borders. The fields are reflective, and light abrasions are noted on both sides. Housed in an older green-label holder.
