1803/2<$5> AU50 PCGS. Breen-6441, B. 1-C, Miller-56, R.4. Four varieties of the 1803 half eagle are known, all of which have the 3 in the date punched over a 2. This one is easily identifiable with a thin die crack through the TED of UNITED, and a missing right foot on the T and the left foot of the Y of LIBERTY. The portrait has light rub on the cheek, brow, and cap, but abundant luster outlines the date, stars, and hair tresses. Generally sharp, with portions of the shield and claws not fully struck. The obverse has an abrasion in the right field, and several gouges are seen at the center of the reverse, however the coin has an attractive and original reddish-golden appearance.
