1803/2 $5 --10% Misaligned Obverse Die--XF45 PCGS
1803/2<$5>--10% Misaligned Obverse Die--XF45 PCGS. Breen-1D, R.4. This is an extraordinary error on an early half eagle, very rarely seen as such. The obverse die is approximately 10% off-center to 5 o'clock while the reverse is properly centered. The reverse border below the tail and over UNITED is weak due to the obverse misalignment. This is undoubtedly one of the first examples struck after the press was set up with new dies, or it is an early strike from a remarriage, with an older obverse die placed back in the press. The only evidence of die damage is a light die crack through most of the stars at the left obverse. The reverse has a bisecting die crack from the border at 10 o'clock through the eagle's wing, the tip of the top leaf, and the E of AMERICA, back to the border. This crack is often seen in a more advanced die state than here. The Breen-1D variety combines defective TY in LIBERTY, with the space between two clouds below the center of E in STATES. T of UNITED is doubled, although this feature is only partially visible. The surfaces have attractive greenish yellow gold with remnants of luster as expected. The surfaces are lightly abraded, yet this remains a highly attractive example of the issue, and would be most highly desired even if it were not a major mint error.
