1803<1C> Small Date, Small Fraction. S-256, B-15, R.3. VF25 NGC. VF20 EAC. Die State V. This coin probably approaches Die State VI, and even a casual perusal will reveal a number of reverse issues that indicate terminal (or nearly so) die life. Chief among these is a break from the rim at the first T in STATES that touches the T and nearly touches the adjoining S and A. Arcing below this is a second die crack that runs from rim to rim at the D in UNITED and ES, entering the wreath between. A third crack runs from the O in OF and nearly joins the second crack. Still another crack runs from between AM to the wreath and to the NE nearby. Clash marks from Liberty's hair are within the wreath. The obverse is seemingly in much better shape, although die buckling is seen in the right obverse field, moderately at the ribbon, and at OF on the reverse. Breen describes Die State VI as "advanced buckling behind ribbon, before face, and at OF," which this coin does not quite exhibit. This interesting coin is on a medium-brown planchet that reveals numerous grade-consistent abrasions under a glass.
Ex: Dorothy Paschal; Ray Chatham (11/2/1977). Envelope Included.
