1803<1C> Small Date, Small Fraction. S-245, B-2, R.3. VF20 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. Die State III. A rare example of this terminal die state of the so-called "unicorn" variety, with an enormous reverse rim break over RICA. The obverse also has extensive die clash marks near Liberty's neck and bust. The Heritage January 2005 sale of the fabulous Wes Rasmussen Collection of United States Large Cents contained an example of about the same overall quality as the present coin. The Heritage cataloger noted of that coin (with Very Fine details, a scratched obverse and graded Fine 15 by conservative EAC standards), "Few finer examples of this terminal die state are known. The Newcomb plate coin for this die state ... appears to be of lesser quality than this coin." The present coin appears to about equal the Rasmussen coin, with perhaps a bit more circulation wear but with fewer distractions. The glossy dark-brown surfaces appear a bit rough under a glass and show some grade-consistent marks, none of them singularly mentionable or apparent to the naked eye. The die misalignment always found on this rare die state results in weakness at the lower left obverse and upper left reverse. An opportunity for the advanced collector that is unlikely soon to repeat.
Ex: Brooklyn Coin (12/8/1969). Envelope Included.
