1803<1C> Small Date, Small Fraction. S-254, B-13, R.2--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. VG7 EAC. Die State IV. This problematic coin has had damage inflicted on it that left a depression in Liberty's hair and a smaller one near the ear. On the reverse there is a small crease in the metal through the central N in ONE, along with a couple of circular pits, small digs, and a rim dig at C. Finally, both surfaces are somewhat rough. Now for the good news: this coin shows a dramatic die break at the rim near 3 in the date that passes through the drapery and merges again with the rim above. The break has filled in downward for about half of its length. At the bottom end nearest the 3, the break splits into two branched breaks. Breen comments in his large cent Encyclopedia that this variety "probably exists with a massive rim break on the entire site" of the original crack. This coin is not yet in that advanced state, but it is not far off. Interestingly, it retains little trace of the vertical crack through the 3 that Breen describes in Die State II.
Ex: Henry C. Hines; Willard C. Blaisdell (2/8/1971). Envelope Included.
