1803<1C> Small Date, Small Fraction. S-252, B-11, R.2--Corroded--NCS. VF Details. VG10 EAC. Die State VIII. This is a common coin in an uncommon die state. Walter Breen's large cent Encyclopedia lists both of the preceding Die States, VI and VII, as "very rare," although frustratingly he fails to quantify the rarity of the last die state listed: the state this coin occupies. Logic dictates, however, that few coins could have been minted by dies that had so many fragments falling out around the rim (although it also asks if more specimens from the bizarre final state might have been saved than from the preceding less noticeable states). Here the rim break has progressed to join 18 with the lowest hair curl, the curve above, and well left into the obverse left field. Examination under magnification reveals no distractions other than a soft strike--not surprising, given the state of the dies--and weak dentilation.
Ex: Stack's (4/1955); Dorothy Paschal; Ray Chatham (11/2/1977). Envelope Included.
