1803<1C> Small Date, Small Fraction. S-246, B-4, High R.3--Environmental Damage--NCS. Fine Details. VG8 EAC. Die State IV. This coin would make a pleasing "bookends" set with the earliest die state of this, the "mumps" variety. Here the lump at the base of Liberty's throat is highly pronounced, if not quite "horizontal," to use Breen's term. The reverse die break is large and runs along the rim from one letter space left of STA almost to the second T, actually touching the tops of STA. Both sides show extensive evidence of die clashing. What apparently looked like environmental damage to NCS is planchet corrosion, mostly microscopic and not really noticeable without a glass. The dark brown surfaces, to the unaided eye, are fairly pleasing and show an interesting level of detail with all the die clashes in evidence. A small obverse rim nick at 3 o'clock is noted for accuracy.
Ex: Denis Loring; Gordon Wrubel (3/20/1974). Envelope Included.
