1803<1C> Small Date, Small Fraction. NC-1, B-9, High R.5--Corroded--NCS. Fine Details. VG8 EAC. Widest 100; point of the top right leaf between ES; OF much nearer to A than to S. Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents 1793-1814 comments, "When [Dr. Sheldon's] Early American Cents appeared, only three were known; when [his later] Penny Whimsy appeared, only 10. There are now approximately 35 known." This coin ranks about midway (although not apparently listed there) within the extended Condition Census as Del Bland elaborates in the Breen tome, having the sharpness of Fine 12 (or perhaps a bit better on the reverse), but with finely corroded surfaces. The fine corrosion is probably most extreme at the 18 in the date, but nowhere is it readily apparent without a glass.
The Condition Census for the NC-1 in Breen comprises 16 coins ranging from Extremely Fine 45 down to Very Good 7. This example is detailed at the "incomplete shoulder loop" and at the incomplete hair curl to the right of the ribbon, and it shows considerable separation in the hair strands and the drapery. On the reverse the lowest left leaf pair shows separation, with the upper leaf showing its central vein. The wide fraction denominator is bold. There are no rim bumps or bruises evident. Perusal with a glass reveals one nick near the obverse rim at 9 o'clock, and a second on the reverse past the D in UNITED. There are no other mentionable distractions. A prime opportunity for the Large Cent specialist to acquire an appealing and desirable example of this rarity.
Ex: Edward Hutchinson (12/24/1949); C. Douglas Smith (11/25/1969). Envelope Included.
