1803<1C> Small Date, Small Fraction. S-256, B-15, R.3. AU55 NGC. VF35 EAC. Die State III. Clash marks are visible above Liberty's hair ribbon. A light obverse crack emerges from the rim to intersect the 8, arcing right through the drapery and the bustline before rejoining the rim. The last segment of this crack is faint on the present specimen. A reverse crack runs from the rim through D, upward along the left center wreath stem, intersecting the lower serif of E to rejoin the rim between E and S. A long, straight die line connects the right stem end with the last A. This coin offers lustrous, milk-chocolate surfaces with a bit of tan color at STATES. The surfaces are smooth and attractive, excepting only what appears to be a small, jagged as-made planchet flaw, about the width of the forecurl, on Miss Liberty's neck. The strike is a bit weak at OF and on Liberty's highpoint hair curls, but there is excellent separation overall on the hair strands, the drapery, and the wreath. This coin ranks in the high end of the Condition Census, namely fourth finest, as presented in Breen's large cent Encyclopedia, which records 12 coins ranging from MS63 to XF40.
Ex: R.
