Wide LIBERTY, base of 3 thin. Large Fraction. Die cut at curve of D. The obverse appears on S-259 and S-260. The reverse appears on S-258 and S-259.<BR><B><BR>Surfaces.</B></I> Cleaned and recolored, now with reddish-brown and pale green color on the obverse, and deeper brown on the reverse. A few tiny pit marks are visible on the otherwise smooth surfaces. <BR><B><BR>Die State III. </B></I>All clash marks, bulges, and die cracks that Breen describes are present on this example, except for the reverse rim break of State IV.<BR><B><BR>Appearances. </B></I>The obverse and reverse are illustrated in Breen's <I>Large Cent Encyclopedia</B></I>.<BR><BR><B>Provenance. </B></I><I>RARCOA (11/1972); C. Rare Coin Company of America</B></I> (RARCOA) sold the Frank H. Masters, Jr. Collection in 1971. A number of early cent collectors, mostly acquainted through EAC, attended the sale. The J.F. Bell collection of gold coins was their first sale, conducted in April 1963. Ed Milas operates the Chicago firm today.
