1803<1C> Small Date, Large Fraction. S-258, B-27, R.1--Burnished--NCS. AU Details. VF30 EAC. Die State III. This coin has artificially bright surfaces and color from burnishing. The effect is not unappealing, but that is partially a function of the minimal wear as much as of surfaces that are "too good to be true." The obverse is medium-brown with some faded red, while the reverse has more olive tones. From the 1 in the date, a long die crack arcs up and left, running through Liberty's lower hair curls and just touching the lower ribbon end before rejoining the rim at 9 o'clock. A die cut runs from the rim above D into its top curve, a hallmark of this reverse. Despite the surface "enhancements," this piece remains desirable and well detailed. The obverse shows sculptural effects on the hair and the drapery, while the reverse shows an uncommon level of wreath detail.
Ex: Stack's (10/22/1945); Willard C.
