1803<1C> Large Date, Large Fraction. S-265, B-23, R.3. XF40 NGC. VF25 EAC. Die State II. This popular variety, which Breen and Sheldon both note has long been popular as a type coin, is distinguished by large numerals with a pointed 1 in the date, and the large reverse fraction. In this die state a reverse crack rises from the rim through the E in UNITED, through ON, past the right wreath tip and to the left side of OF. This attractive specimen, on a mocha-brown planchet with some faded reddish highlights, shows no mentionable marks under glass, save for a small nick on Liberty's bust near the neck. The coin is in the top one-quarter of Del Bland's extended Condition Census in Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents 1793-1814, which comprises 17 coins ranging from AU50 to VF25.
Ex: David Proskey; Henry C.
