1803<1C> 100/000. S-249, B-7, R.2--Environmental Damage--NCS. VF Details. Fine 15 EAC. Die State I. Walter Breen's large cent Encyclopedia claims that mint engraver Robert Scot was running low on die steel when he resorted to taking an 1801 reverse die (first used to produce the 1801 NC-3), corrected the 1/000 fraction error, reannealed the die, and reused it to produce this "corrected fraction" variety of 1803. Breen conjectures that the reannealing shortened the die life and may have contributed to the reverse die break above ED. In this early die state, examples that are sufficiently well centered, such as the present specimen, show the break clearly. There is no evidence of the die bulge before Liberty's bust that later develops. This coin has olive-brown surfaces that are sprinkled with a few light copper-colored areas. Under magnification the surfaces are pebbly and rough, showing a small spot or two of corrosion. To the naked eye, however, the surfaces are fairly pleasing, except for a gash from Liberty's forehead that extends into the right field.
Ex: Dom Perri (11/23/1968). Envelope Included.
