1803<1C> 100/000. S-249, B-7, R.2. Good 4 NGC. Good 5 EAC. Die State VI. Breen calls both Die State V and this die state, almost certainly the terminal one, "very rare." On the obverse a break that developed along the rim now extends about 30 degrees in each direction, coming close to the 3 in the date and touching the drapery. On the reverse a large rim break extends downward to cover the tops of RIC. Both of these breaks are so severe that they certainly appear as though they were loose, or about to work loose and break off of the dies. This medium-brown coin, graded Good 4, appears to have been struck from dies that were also axially misaligned, so that there is weakness in the details at the top of each side that appear to be only Fair, while the bottoms (the date and the corrected fraction, respectively) have the detail of Very Good or a bit better. Finally, the reverse die is rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. An interesting and affordable specimen that gives considerable insight into the workings of our nation's first Mint during its early years.
Ex: William R.T.
