1803 10C --Obverse Scratched, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. 1803[10C] JR-4, R.5.--Obverse Scratched, Impr
1803<10C> JR-4, R.5.--Obverse Scratched, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. The obverse is scratched from the second star through Liberty's hair knot and back of her head to the R of LIBERTY and there are two fainter scratches which run horizontally across the obverse. As to the cleaning, the devices are light silver with darker gray in the fields. As usual for the variety, the reverse is boldly struck despite the shattered die. Numerous die cracks arc and curl through the right side, with the heaviest crack splitting the right wing of the eagle and continuing through the shield to the arrow feathers and rim below. This shattered die was first used to coin the 1802 JR-2 variety, and later die states of the 1802 are known to show the extensive die cracks seen here. These 1803 coins were struck even later using this badly shattered reverse die, unusual for the Mint even at that time to drag such a broken die back into service. A handful of specimens are seen in high circulated grades, but this is a very difficult die pairing to obtain as high as XF.
Ex: Bill Subjack (October 1981). Envelope Included.
