1803<10C> JR-2, R.6. Fine 12 NGC. Medium to dark gray and very attractive for the moderate grade. The strike and surfaces are excellent for this rare die pairing, and few are known in finer technical condition than the present coin. Examination with a strong loupe will find a thin scratch down Liberty's face, and this scratch continues to up the rim between TY, and the portion within the field may have been expertly smoothed as the scratch fades as it crosses that area.
The obverse die had been previously paired to coin the rare JR-1 variety, and after that reverse failed or was replaced, this old reverse die was resurrected from 1802 with the strong die crack through the CA of AMERICA and the light die crack from the rim through the left claw of the eagle, shield, N of UNUM and the two lower right stars to the cloud above was brought back into service. Not many coins were made as the reverse continued to fail and a new reverse die was paired to start coinage of the more plentiful JR-3 die marriage for this year. The Condition Census for this variety is 55 (the Miles coin), 35, 30, 15, 12 and possibly a few others. This particular die pairing is very difficult to find in grades above F12, and scarce in any grade.
Ex: Bill Subjack (August 1982). Envelope Included.
