1803 10C --Cleaned--ANACS. AU55 Details. JR-2, R.6. Ex: Lovejoy. The JR plate coin for this variety and as such probably the finest known. The 1803 dime is tough to find in high grades regardless of variety, with a mere two pieces certified in Mint State grades and fewer than twenty in AU or higher. Amazingly, even with an R.6 rarity rating and perhaps 15 pieces known, JR-2 is only the third rarest of the five varieties of the year. The variety's true rarity might best be put into perspective by the fact that Heritage has only offered one other such piece in the past, the Reiver coin, which graded a mere Fine 12. Indeed, our description for the Reiver coin lists the condition census for the variety as 55 (the Miles coin, the coin offered in this lot), 35, 30, 15, 12.
The noted cleaning is light, mostly manifesting itself as an unobtrusive series of hairlines in the fields. The coin has retoned nicely to a light olive-gold through many of the fields, while the recessed areas retain their silver color and a fair degree of luster. The strike is exceptionally thorough for an early US Mint product with weakness limited to a few of the stars, and only a trace of wear can be seen, primarily on the clouds. The reverse shows a series of cracks as a result of its use for previous marriages of both dimes (1802) and quarter eagles. An attractive coin despite the qualifier, and likely the finest JR-2 extant.
Ex: R. L. Miles Collection (Stack's, 4/69, lot 604); Lovejoy Collection (Stack's, 10/90, lot 23); ANR (9/05, lot 237).
