Luster dominates the borders and devices of this bold example, which is well struck except for the eagle's left (facing) claw and a couple of left side stars. The eagle's breast feathers and shield are intricate, and wear is detected primarily on the peak of the cap and the drapery along the bust truncation. The obverse is beautiful and would make a fine display. The reverse, unluckily, has several prominent scratches focused on the horizontal shield lines. Nonetheless, a desirable large denomination early gold piece. All 1803 Eagles share the same obverse die, but six different reverses are known. For the A reverse, the closest arrowhead to the N in UNITED is parallel with the foot of the N. Struck from clashed dies, and a delicate die crack above the tail connects the fletchings to the olive branch.
